In an age when music is often hard to fit nice and snug into specific genres, Kinder Scout flat out prove frustratingly impossible to peg. Formed by three friends from different parts of the world, their work has been defined as jazz meets post-classical meets new ages ambient.
Danny Norbury, Jason Corder, and Ian Hawgood are linked together by Craig Tattersall, of The Boats and Remote Viewer fame. Another common link is Miles Whittaker (Demdike Stare, Pendle Coven), whose mastering skills have not only made Danny's own album sound as if it were recorded somewhere much more expensive than his bedroom, but The Boats records as well. Miles has mastered all of the Kinder Scout work so far,
In 2011 they became incredibly popular in Japan after releasing their debut in a Japan-only print on the esteemed Preco label. It soon became picked up in Jazz circles where it was promptly defined as a new-type of post-classical jazz, with its cross of wild saxophone, beats, guitars, and cello, layered over a base of kalimba sourced drone. 'The Writing Life' was followed up in 2012 with 'The Curio Collection' which sold out so quickly in Japan, the rest of the world hardly had time to notice.
Boomkat probably put it best when they said the following of the group: 'detailed tapestry of organically breathing electronics which moves unpredictably but carefully through dense, swelling crests and into sparse valleys of rested tones. There's a sensitive feeling of ecology and economy to their sound, a constant flow between symbiotic layers of naturally occurring melody and drones which find a stability from the gently haphazard arrangement.'
Just to be even more annoying, they are currently working on a techno record.
Due to their geographical locations (USA, UK, Japan), they will be playing a rare one-off audio-visual show on the first night of HomeNormalism at Cafe Oto, London in August. The performance together will mark the first time Ian and Danny have played with Jason live, and the improvised audio-visual set will be recorded for release later in the year.
